Gainsborough: Blue Boy

It is believed that Gainsborough painted Blue Boy as a tribute to Van Dyck. The blue costume is characteristic of clothes worn about 175 years before the picture was painted; one might suppose that Jonathan hated getting dressed up and posing for this picture. He strikes me as a spoiled-rotten rich kid.

[ It amuses me that Thomas Hoving in his wonderful book Greatest Works of Art of Western Civilization (museum bookstore), says of the same painting that he looks like a nice kid and hopes he had the best of life. The comments either say more about Hoving, or more about me, than they do about the painting.
