20th Century Art from North America has been divided into two sections. The pre World War II period and the post war period.
The isolation of the United States while broken by the First World War, came back strongly after the war. The great depression and prohibition reinforced this isolation. The North American contenent was not the center of the arts for the first half of the century, although a tradition of fine art experimentation started in New York near the turn of the century.
After World War II, arts in North America flowered. Global communication expanded in an awe inspiring way. The result was that by the end of the 20th Century there is a global arts community.
By this I don't mean art of significance doesn't get created in a studio with little publicity. Artists create individually; the creative act is a private thing. But even the most secluded artist is affected and put in contact with politics, events, and other artists' work by the magic of global communication.
